Super Science!

Separating Mixtures

We have now started out new topic, which is heavily based on Science.  Our topic title is POTIONS.  On Friday we were faced with a problem in 6C.  Mr Oopsy Daisy was making a delivery to school, but dropped everything and all of the items mixed together.  Within the mixture there was: sand, salt, paper clips and gravel.

Our task was to help Mr Oopsy Daisy separate the mixture again successfully.

We started out by discussing what we knew about separating materials.  We had previously learnt about evaporation, filtering and sieving.

Sieving - Separating the big bits from the small bits.

Filtering - Separating a soluble and insoluble material (sand and sal solution).
Evaporation - A liquid changing into a vapour (gas).

After we had discussed our ideas, we made a plan, which involved a setp-by-step approach.  It was great to hear everyone in class using key scientific words, including: soluble and insoluble.  It was amazing how everyone linked their learning to this situation. Mr Clarke also gave out other equipment that wasn't needed, but the children had discussed exactly what they needed and what they were going to use.  They knew they also needed a magnet to separate the paper clips!

The challenge was set and it was tme to investigate....

We were really successful in separating the mixtures.  Below are some pictures showing each of the groups at work.

Tomorrow we are moving on and starting to carry out more investigations.  Our main focus tomorrow is measuring the change of temperature.  For this, we will be investigating thermal insulators.

A few last things!

Today brings us to the end of the Spring term.  We spent the morning in assembly, where Mr Crees told us all about Easter and why it's special to Christians. He shared some of his childhood memories.

After this we returned to class to read the remaining three chapters of Holes.  It exceeded even our high expectations. Even the last chapter had twists and turns! What a fantastic book, which I'm sure we won't forget.  Louis Sachar has written a follow-up book to this entitled 'Small Steps'.  Apparently, this book follows the adventures of two of the boys from Camp Green lake, Armpit and X-Ray. Many of us in 6C want to read this to see what happens to them. We are going to share Chapter One after the holiday and do some follow-up written work based on this!

We ended our morning by answering some questions on the last few chapters. We are getting much better at answering in full sentences, quoting from the text and giving page references!

Here we are at work:

Yesterday Mr Clarke spent a long time searching for a book for Year 6 to study after the Easter holidays.  A decision has been made.  We will be reading Artemis Fowl....

Check out the reviews of this book, this too sounds AMAZING!

This afternoon we are going to watch the film of Holes. We will let you know our thoughts after the holiday in our next blog.

To end, here is some of the fantastic work we've produced this term:

Another Busy Week!

This is our first whole class blog to show what has been happening in Class 6C.

Don't forget, you can also catch-up on what's been happening at: http://itsc1562s131.j2webby.com/?cat=7 where the children have all posted individual blogs to share their learning!

We have been busy bringing our topic to an end this week.  It has been EXPRESS week and that means lots to finish off and lots of learning to show.  Our topic this half term has been BEAST CREATOR and one of our most popular yet.  Just when we think we couldn't top our last topic, we go and do it again.

There has been some super learning taking place and lots of memories being created.  We discussed just today during our class council meeting the impact that our new Curriculum is having on our experiences in school.  Everyone in 6C agreed that our new Curriculum is so much more exciting and enjoyable. Some of our highlights from this topic have been:

Making bug models...

 Visiting The Butterfly Farm...

Making our News Reports and PowerPoint Presentations...

So, what have we been doing this week?

This week has been busy, busy, busy..... Bringing all of our experiences together to conclude our work on Beast Creator. Apart from that we have been finishing off Holes by Louis Sachar in Literacy. It is safe to say that this book has been a real hit with everyone. The storyline is amazing, with lots of twists, turns and unexpected connections between characters! Today we made warning posters for Camp Green Lake to warn people of the dangers when around yellow spotted lizards!

We just have three Chapters left to read tomorrow and then our treat for the afternoon is to watch the movie. We just hope that the film lives up to our expectations! What happens to Stanley? Does he survive the hole of doom full of yellow spotted lizards? Is there a happy ending? Mr Clarke then spent some time this afternoon discussing with Mr Rothwell, Mrs Pitt and Mr Crees aswell as researching on the Internet to try and find another exciting class reader for Year 6 next term - this was a hard task as Holes has been 'Epic' to quote some of the children. There are a few ideas noted down and Mrs Guest is researching too.  If you have any suggestions, let us know and leave a comment!

Today we ended the day by looking at Easter with Mrs Dewell. We discussed why Easter is celebrated. We also did fun activities linked to Easter, including making Easter cards and baskets! Where was the Easter bunny though?

We'd like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a HAPPY EASTER from 6C - enjoy the break! We will be back with more blogging after the holiday.

Our next topic is POTIONS with a lot more fun activities planned! Watch this space...
